Mapping Ten Years of Eviction Filings in Cleveland

Ten years of eviction filings in the Cleveland Municipal Housing Court are mapped by neighborhood below. While not every eviction reaches the courtroom, these filings can offer a representative picture of the neighborhoods most affected.

Demographic and property-value data, from the U.S. Census and Zillow are mapped on the right for comparison purposes. Eviction filings by the Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA), which account for roughly 14% of all eviction filings during this period, can be filtered out using the toggle at the top. Clicking any neighborhood will plot its eviction filings in detail on the map at the bottom.

Notes

The data on these maps represents total eviction court filings, not total evictions. While the data on eviction filings represented here hopes to present a representative picture of evictions occuring in Cleveland, it almost certainly underrepresents the full universe of evictions occuring. Research has shown that formal eviction filings make up roughly a third of total evictions, as many take place outside of a courthouse.

Data for 2020 is incomplete, including court filings up until only December 12, 2020. Complete data will be updated at the end of the year.

Older Zillow property value data is unavailable for many neighborhoods.
